The ATO’s data-matching system is now very sophisticated and operates on a large scale. The sources it matches are wide and the aim is to check that taxpayers are complying properly with the tax laws. For example, the ATO data-matches transactions involving shares, credit card transactions, sale of motor vehicles, land sales, etc. With the 2015 tax return deadline looming, Terry Hayes, Editor-in-Chief, Thomson Reuters Tax Newsroom, was interviewed by Ross Greenwood for the national Channel 9 News about the ATO’s data-matching activities.
